If you don’t know much about essential oils, they are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and fruit of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. If you have ever enjoyed the gift of a rose, a walk by a field of lavender, or the smell of freshly cut mint, you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils.

Therapeutic Grade Essential oils are non-water-based phytochemical’s made up of volatile aromatic compounds. Although they are fat soluble, they do not include fatty lipids or acids found in vegetable and animal oils.

Essential oils are very clean and are immediately absorbed by the skin.

Even though therapeutic grade essential oils are natural and therefore assumed to be gentle, this is not always the case. They are highly potent and a couple of drops can go a long way. These oils are up to 75 times stronger than dried herbs, this gives you an idea of their efficiency and potency.

Headaches: Essential oils serve as a more effective and safer alternative to treat headaches and migraines when compared to pain relievers. There are also a lot of different ways that you can use essential oils, such as…

Vaporizing and Diffusing: The most common way of using therapeutic grade essential oils is to use a vaporizer and/or a diffuser. Vaporizers and diffusers come in many different types and are made of many different materials, like plastic, ceramic, glass, metal, terra-cotta, and more.

  • Heat / Candle: Heat diffusers are very popular and inexpensive. They consist of a terra cotta bowl on top with an oven opening below it for a tea light candle. Once you add your drops of oil into the top where the bowl is, you light a tealight candle and place it underneath the bowl in the designated slot. As soon as the candle starts to heat up the water above it, the essential oil in the water will start to evaporate and the aroma will dissipate. *Use this type of vaporizer with care when around children or elderly people, since the candle is an open flame, and the water can be quite hot. Please make sure to follow any precautions stated in the directions that come with your diffuser.
  • Electric Diffuser: An alternative to the candle type of diffuser, which utilizes heat to break up the oil, an electric diffuser uses sound waves to break up the mixture of oil and water inside the metal reservoir, creating a cool mist to inhale. This method is ideal to use in kid’s rooms, and around the elderly, as well as pets as there is no open flame but you still need to keep it in a safe place so the oil doesn’t spill. 
  • Terra cotta ring: This method allows you a way to diffuse the aroma of your oil into the air gradually and is deal for small, confined spaces like a closet, drawers, or pantry. You would apply the drops directly to the ring, usually carved in a decoration and hung on a string, let it soak and hang it up! Once you no longer smell the oil, you just reapply and repeat the process!
  • Light Bulb diffuser: Light-bulb rings are also useful, and are available in ceramic as well as metal. The therapeutic grade essential oils are placed on the ring, and the ring is then placed on a cold, turned-off light bulb. As soon as the light-bulb is switched on, the essential oil starts to evaporate and the aroma dissipates.
  • DIY Mothball: Another way to vaporize a cupboard, is to place a few drops of therapeutic grade essential oil on a small ball of cotton wool, and then to place the cotton wool ball in a cupboard or drawer – but take care that it does not touch your clothes, since the oil may stain. Some people use this method to keep fish moths and other undesirables away from their clothes and to add a fragrance to their clothes cupboards. An oil often used to combat fish moths is clove oil, and although strong smelling is a very nice fragrance to have in your cupboards.

Dry Evaporation / Direct Inhalation: This method is convenient and can be done anywhere at anytime. By placing a drop of therapeutic grade essential oil on a cotton ball or a piece of tissue, you are able to breathe in the vapors as it dries. Depending on the oil itself, you can hold it up to your nose for a quicker effect or you can just leave it in your vicinity, like your desk or on your car dashboard. This method is preferred for those who experience anxiety in traffic, during test taking, job interviews, etc.because of its convenience. 

Steam: Simply place 1-2 drops of your desired therapeutic grade essential oil in a bowl of steaming hot water and place a towel over your head, creating a hood that keeps the steam underneath. As you breathe deeply, the therapeutic benefits of your oil will take effect rather quickly and can be overwhelming, yet soothing all at once. This method is preferred for those that are ill with sinus or upper respiratory infections, as well as those that experience acne. This is one of the most potent methods and is not recommended for small children. 

Spray: The spray method is suitable for most therapeutic grade essential oils and requires just a few drops in a spray bottle filled with water. Once the solution is mixed, you can use your spray in various ways, including; deodorizing a room or setting the ambiance. You can even use a citrus or pine oil and use it to deodorize yoga mats!

Saunas: It is generally accepted that sauna baths originated in Finland, although “sweat therapy” or “sweat baths” are part of many cultural norfolk medicines. The logic behind the health benefits of having a sauna, is that sitting in a heated sauna would simulate an artificial “fever” and in so doing stimulate the immune response of the body to be activated, which in turn would speed up the production of white blood cells – some studies have shown a remarkable increase during “artificial fevers”.

Topical Application: There are several techniques to apply therapeutic grade essential oils topically, all of which are beneficial depending on the reason you’re applying it. For almost all topical applications, you will need a carrier, or something to mix the oil with such as vegetable oil, nut oil, or even water if applicable. 

  • Compress – drops of therapeutic grade essential oil are mixed with the carrier and is applied directly to a dressing which is then applied directly to the desired area. 
  • Gargle – if your therapeutic grade essential oil is safe for gargling, you can use one drop diluted in water and gargle for no more than 60 seconds. For example, you can use tea tree oil to gargle for sore throat. Under no circumstance should you ever swallow the oil as none of it is safe for ingestion. 
  • Bath – A few drops of therapeutic grade essential oil in a warm bath can make you feel refreshed as well as alleviate your aches and pains. One thing to remember is the oil is not water soluble so you will need to add epsom salt or baking soda to the water before entering. 
  • Massage – One of the most popular techniques of application is via massage. It is very important, however, to make sure that the concentration of therapeutic grade essential oil to carrier does not exceed 1% and the massage should be gentle. 

Ingestion: Many oils are safe to ingest and flavor food when used appropriately, but It is still important to know which oils are safe to consume and consult with your doctor before doing so.

Sensitive Skin Warning:

If you have sensitive skin, do NOT use essential oils topically. In addition, some areas of the skin are more sensitive than others and could lead to a reaction even if you don’t typically have skin sensitivities, so use of essential oils should be avoided in these areas. It is also important to remember that with their effectiveness, essential oils are also very potent and residual oil may remain on your hands or fingers after topical application. After applying oils with your hands, make sure to thoroughly wash them with soap and warm water. Also, avoid rubbing or touching your face and eyes after applying oil as these areas tend to be very sensitive to essential oils. After topical application, please avoid direct sunlight/UV rays for 12 hours.

If you are pregnant or nursing, please do not use essential oils as they are skin absorbing. If you have high blood pressure or diabetes, please consult your physician before using any essential oil products. 

Sensitive Areas to be Avoided:

  •  Skin around the eyes
  •  Eyes
  •  Inner ears
  •  Genitals
  •  Broken, damaged, or otherwise injured skin.
  • Any other areas of sensitive skin

Should you experience skin discomfort after using essential oils topically, do not flush with water as water will drive the oil into the skin. Instead, flush with the carrier oil you used in your mixture. This may also be a sign of detoxification, so it is recommended to DRINK water to help flush toxins out of your body. When applying topically, please make sure to apply to clean, dry skin, free of any soaps, lotions, perfumes, or ointments as any of these can cause a reaction that leads to skin discomfort. If discomfort persists for more than 24 hours, please discontinue use of the oil and seek medical assistance.
